Located just north of Jalisco, Zacatecas boasts a rich history of agave distillation. The Bañuelos family, now in their fourth generation, operate a renowned taberna (distillery) in the southernmost part of the region.

Jaime and his son Fortino are known for their passion for working with horses, which is reflected in the label of their prized creation, Hacienda de Bañuelos Masparillo. This exceptional spirit is produced using an incredibly rare agave variety that grows wild on the hills of the Bañuelos property.

The wild Masparillo agaves are short and stout, and take a staggering 12 years to mature, making them extremely difficult to cultivate. Despite the challenges, the Bañuelos family has successfully produced a mezcal that is a testament to their dedication and expertise.
